Indoor Air Quality IAQ Assessment methods
Referring to the Guidance Note form EPD, there are basically two types of assessment methods, namely real-time and integrated sample. Real-time monitors can be used for detection of pollutant sources and provide information on the variation of pollutant levels throughout the day. Integrated samples, normally obtained during the 8 working-hours for offices, can provide information on the total exposure level of a particular pollutant. Regardless of the choice of the method, it is very important to ensure proper operating of the equipment and handling of the samples, as well as stringent quality assurance procedures including equipment calibration in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations, duplicate, field and shipment blank samples. A reasonableness checklist should be formulated for the instrument operator in the field so that any abnormality readings could be detected instantly

For interpretation of indoor measurement results, outdoor air quality should be monitored in parallel in close proximity to the fresh air intakes of the study areas. Monitor inlets and sensors should be located approximately 1 metre off the edge of the duct inlet. If the monitors and sensors are placed outdoor, they must be enclosed in an appropriate shelter to shield from direct sunlight and moisture.


General Guidelines for Siting Indoor Monitoring Locations from GN

During field data collection, monitors should be sited at the selected location using the following general guidelines

 

* Representative to the primary workstation layout and work activities

* Selected to minimise impact on work activities within the study area

* At least 0.5 metre from corners or windows

* At least 0.5 metre from walls, partitions, and other vertical surfaces (e.g. file cabinets)

* Not be directly under or in front of air supply diffusers, induction units, floor fans, or heaters, etc.

* Not be where direct sunlight will impact instrumentation

* Hallways or passageways are not preferred

 

* Not be within 1 metre of localised sources such as photocopiers, printers, cigarette smokers, etc.

* Not obstruct or interfere with occupant egress from the study area under normal or emergency situations

* Inlets of samplers should be placed at a height of 1.1 m above the floor; except for temperature and air motion, which should be measured at the 0.1, 0.6, and 1.1m levels for sedentary occupants. Standing activity measurements for temperature and air motion should be made at the 0.1, 1.1, and 1.7m levels.
